New Zealand Immigration Policy

The immigration regulations of New Zealand are strictly controlled and enforced.
The New Zealand Government policy permits the granting of permanent residence up to 45,000 persons per year under a range of visa classes, allowing both permanent and temporary residence. However it is estimated that up to twice this number apply for immigration to New Zealand every year.

There are a variety of compulsory requirements that each applicant must meet in order to achieve residence in New Zealand which are constantly changing to meet the social and economic needs of the country. Residence in New Zealand

Under the Immigration Act 1987, every person who wishes to immigrate to New Zealand needs to apply for residence. Residence entitles you to live, study and work indefinitely in New Zealand.

Do you need to Apply for Residence?

Under the Immigration Act 1987, some people do not have to apply for residence to live in New Zealand. They include:

	New Zealand citizens, who must show a valid New Zealand passport on entering New Zealand;
	Australian citizens, who must show a valid Australian passport on entering New Zealand.

Australian permanent residents entering New Zealand with a current Australian resident return visa will be granted a residence permit on arrival. Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents are subject to section of the Immigration Act 1987, which relates to good character.

Which Category Applies to You?

Essentially, there are two main ways to immigrate. Either :

	Permanent New Zealand Visas which entitle a person to remain permanently, OR
	Temporary New Zealand Visas which authorize temporary stay, subject to conditions.
